Have you ever spent a minute reflecting on all of the plastic bottles you have used this year? That’s a lot of money going into the landfill! Is it worth the clean water? Probably! But there is a better way to get that clean water, without running to the store every time the water bottles run out. A water filtration system purifies your water for you. There are many options, including the pitcher, the under-the-sink filter, and the whole-house filtration system.

How Water Filtration Systems Work

It takes a lot of work to get those contaminants out of the water, but this work happens mostly at the micro level. Physical filtration involves a gauze-like material that removes or prevents the entry, of large particles. And by large, we mean anything it can get a hold of. Still, very small materials get through the physical filtration. Worse, tiny bacteria and chemicals have a little problem.

Luckily, there’s chemical filtration as well. These include many methods such as sequestration, ion exchange, and reverse osmosis. These sophisticated filters use scientific processes and patented technology to chemically remove unwanted minerals, chemicals, contaminants, and – of course – pollutants.

The Types of Water Filters

You have many options when it comes to choosing a water filter, but there are only three primary types of water filters you can purchase.

The first is the filtered water pitcher. This might sound like it doesn’t count, and we agree, but it is worth mentioning. These usually work quite simply. You pour water into a reservoir compartment in the water pitcher and that water slowly flows through the filter and into the pitcher. All water filters use a combination of physical and chemical filtrations, but the water pitcher does not have much room to work with.

The second option is installed at the plumbing fixture. For instance, you can install a filter on your kitchen sink. There are ones you can screw onto your kitchen faucet, but an under-the-sink water filter is out of sight and doesn’t take up valuable space. These are great because they offer filtered water through the tap!

What if you want clean water out of all taps? Installing that many filters can get expensive. Instead, you can consider a whole-house filtration system. Whole-house filtration systems filter water before it is delivered to all of the household plumbing. That gives you cleaner water for your dishwashing, laundry, and refrigerator too!
